A benefit to being a resident of Bourne is access to the Bourne Landfill. Residents can have stickers for two cars. This gives access to the recycling facilities Bourne Dump, and discounts on the disposal of bulky items like mattresses and sofas. Residents of Falmouth, Mashpee, and Sandwich can use the landfill during regular hours, however they must weigh their trash and recyclables and pay accordingly.
A local favorite is Dorothy’s Swap Shop located at the exit of the landfill. Dorothy’s Swap Shop in Bourne was named in honor of the late Dorothy Wilson, a long-time town volunteer in the early 1990s. Residents leave household items that are in usable condition for others to take and is a terrific resource if you are just starting out in life or have a new beach cottage to furnish!
The Town of Bourne also collects trash and recyclables weekly. This cost is included in your property tax. The link here shows collection days for Bourne trash and recyclable collection https://www.townofbourne.com/public-works/pages/trash-recycling-collection-schedules
Property taxes in Bourne are reasonable at roughly $9 per assessed thousand. Plymouth, which charges per bag on trash pickup has a property tax of more than $16 per assessed thousand. The savings and convenience of simply being across the town line whether near Head of the Bay Road, or in Sagamore Beach can be huge!
